Ingredients

  • 2 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper freshly ground
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg freshly grated
  • 1 1/2 cups Gruyère cheese grated
  • 2 tablespoons butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. 1 Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
  2. 2 In a saucepan, combine the heavy cream, milk, garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until warm, stirring occasionally. Do not boil.
  3. 3 Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in an even layer in the prepared baking dish.
  4. 4 Pour half of the cream mixture over the potatoes, then sprinkle half of the grated Gruyère cheese on top.
  5. 5 Repeat the layering process with the remaining potatoes, cream mixture, and Gruyère cheese.
  6. 6 Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 60 minutes.
  7. 7 Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 30 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  8. 8 Allow the gratin to cool slightly before serving to allow the layers to set.
